DanORC partners Arne Astrup and Thorkild I. A. Sørensen at Satellite ECO 2009

ImageAs a part of the ECO 2009 Pre Congress meeting 'Prevention of Weight (re)Gain' on 4-6 May 2009 DanORC partners Arne Astrup and Thorkild IA Sørensen will participate in an open debate on the topic 'Obesity: nature and nuture? So what?'. The debate takes place on Monday 4 May opening two days of lectures and workshops on obesity. The Pre Congress is organized by the Diogenes Project, funded by the EU.

DanORC partner Torben Hansen appointed professor at SDU

On 15 January 2009 Torben Hansen (senior researcher at Steno Diabetes Center) held his inaugural lecture as affiliated professor in Molecular Genetics at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Southern Denmark. Torben Hansen has a distinguished career as researcher in the field of molecular genetics and has for some years worked together with professor Oluf B. Pedersen and several research groups at SDU on hereditary causes for type 2 diabetes, obesity, dyslipidemia and raised bloodpressure. Also affiliated professor at the University of Southern Denmark is DanORC partner Berit L.

Statistical consulting available for DanORC partners

Since February 2009 the DanORC coordination team has been joined by swedish statistician Lars Ängquist (employed at the Institute of Preventive Medicine in Copenhagen). Lars holds a PhD in Mathematical Statistics from the Centre of Mathematical Sciences of Lund University, Sweden, in which he directed his thesis towards the field of genetic linkage analysis (a subfield to statistical genetics). Lars is available for counselling and consultation for members of the different DanORC research groups.

New board member - Torben Greve

Torben Greve, Vice-Dean for Research at the Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Copenhagen, has replaced Søren Frandsen - former Director General at the Institute of Food and Resource Economics - in the DanORC board of directors. Torben Greve is dr.med.vet. and one of Denmarks leading scientits in the research field of animal cloning. For further information on Torben Greve see here.

Nordic Obesity Meeting 17-18 September 2009

The 'Norwegian Association of the Study of Obesity' is organizing a 'Nordic Obesity Meeting' 17-18 September 2009 in Oslo. The meeting will gather researchers from various research areas as well as clinicians from all Scandinavia with interest in the field of obesity and diabetes. For further information see here.

New paper by DanORC partner

DanORC centre leader professor Thorkild IA Sørensen has written a paper on the 'Challenges in the study of the Causation of obesity'. The paper was published in 'Proceedings of the Nutrition Society' in December 2008. See publication.

PhD Course: Basal metabolism and molecular mechanisms in the metabolic syndroms

The Danish PhD School of Molecular Metabolism has organized a PhD course on 'Metabolism and molecular mechanisms in the metabolic syndrome'. The course will take place at Hotel Storebælt, Nyborg, at May 25-28 2009. For further information see here.

Diogenes Satellite Symposium 4-6 May 2009

A Satellite Symposium of the European Congress on Obesity (ECO 2009) - 'Prevention of weigth (re)gain - has been organised by DIOGENES at which the key results and insights generated by the project across its five research themes will be revealed and discussed. DIOGENES, managed by Professor Wim Saris (Maastricht University), is an EC-funded pan-European Research Programme targeting the obesity problem from a dietary perspective.
